El-Roi Baby Home February 2024 Report

Ephesians 5:1 “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.”

As the month of love, February is the time when we celebrate Valentine’s Day and we make time for remembering love. We emphasise the importance of having someone special in our lives and how they make everything better. While this month is associated primarily with Valentine’s Day, the journey of love doesn’t stop there as we serve and love our children every day.

We were so blessed during this month by the Eiken family from Norway, they built a beautiful jungle gym for our children.

We appreciate the support we see from our colleagues for sharing our wish list, donations of clothes, wet wipes, nappies and baby food are coming every week.  Volunteers and teams are helping at the baby home and that shows so much love that they have for our children.

Our children are doing very well, they are happy, healthy and developing very well. Currently there are 14 children at the baby Home, 6 boys and 8 girls. We had 4 babies that weren’t back from home ever since they visited their families and adoptive parents in December, out of these 4 babies, 2 babies have been reunified with their families, and 2 babies who are siblings have been successfully adopted.

We had a new admission on the 8th February, and we had a challenge of turning away 6 children that were siblings, some of them being over the age of 4. One child was admitted to hospital on the 21st of February 2024 after she wasn’t feeling well, she was not keeping formula and solids food in her stomach, crying more intense when sitting and had recurring constipation. She was discharged on the 23rd after she took some test which came back negative and was given treatment to take until she is fully recovered.

2 of our babies are continuing with their speech and physiotherapy and there is a huge improvement in terms of how their speak and how they walk. The Social worker had 4 cases reviewed, with case managers from Vulamehlo DSD, Child welfare Margate, child welfare port Shepstone, and Umzumbe DSD.

Our Action Plan

  • To provide after-care to the kids that were lawfully discharged from El-Roi back to their families.

  • To admit another 2 siblings from Umzinto DSD.
